Untitled

1994

The Artist’s Project Studio, Cardiff, Wales, UK

Water in a glass tank, wood and paint

Identity in Place? (monograph), Cristina Crossingham

“Aoyagi made ‘Untitled’ 1994, her first major installation, at The Artist’s Project, Cardiff. This was a work of water, light and air in an old industrial building. The interior surfaces were painted black reinforcing the strength and interiority of the space. The windows were removed and on the floor was a rectangular trough filled to the brim with water. Light flowed directly onto the water surface which trembled with air movement. The juxtaposition of black walls and intense light evoked the dark shadowy spaces of traditional Japanese architecture, challenging the European norm of the building as an enclosure. Inside and outside converged on the surface of the water.”
